thumb|left The Missionary functions like a fast and armored Monk. As such, it is capable of healing units as well as converting enemy units. It can move quite fast, making it capable of fleeing from almost all enemy units except non-elephant cavalry. Including several of these in a force of Knights can considerably improve chances of winning a drawn-out battle. They are affected by all Monastery technologies, Inquisition, and cavalry unit technologies, except those which increase attack. They have an advantage in movement speed, which is one of the major Monk weaknesses, but the Missionary only has 7 (8 with Inquisition) range compared to the 9 of a Monk. Since The Last Chieftains, the Missionary can also pick up Relics. Both the Monk and the Missionary have the same cost, making the choice between them mostly a matter of tactical utility. The Missionary generally outperforms the Monk in most ways thanks to its defensive capabilities, as it can flee from counterattacks in addition to benefiting from cavalry technologies. With Bloodlines, the Missionary will also have more hit points than the Monk, reaching up to 65, enough to tank two direct Mangonel or Onager hits, greatly improving survival against such key units. However, its cavalry armor class makes it much more vulnerable to the Spearman line and camel units. Despite its better speed, the Missionary is still very vulnerable to Light Cavalry, who deal bonus damage to armor class and can more than match the Missionary's speed. The Missionary has considerably less range than the Monk in the early Castle Age, so for situations where they are already protected, the regular Monk performs better. However, once they get their technologies, Missionaries should be preferred for their tactical flexibility.
Consejos
- They are fast moving monks on donkeys making them great for keeping up with cavalry armies.ageofnotes
- They cannot pick up Relics which limits their economic utility significantly.ageofnotes
- Light cavalry and Eagle Warriors counter them extremely hard.ageofnotes
- They have a shorter conversion range than standard monks.ageofnotes
- Archers can easily snipe them from a distance before they finish converting a unit.ageofnotes
- Commander, the Missionary is Spain's mobile conversion unit. At 1.1 speed, he keeps pace with cavalry, allowing frontline conversions during combat. His 7 range is shorter than regular monks (9), but his mobility compensates. Use Missionaries to convert enemy knights mid-battle. They're especially effective when your opponent invests heavily in cavalry.aoecoach
- Only 30 HP and no armor. They die instantly to focused fire. Keep them protected behind your main army.aoecoach
